In 2013, I was invited by Edward Conteh, the Head of the Amputee and War-Wounded Association in Sierra Leone, to return to the country. Instead of closing my anthropological research, he asked me to assist the organisation to document what they felt was an injustice occurring in their communities. Using ideas of emancipatory engagement found in disability studies and co-production found in participatory action research, we designed a qualitative research project using semi-structured interviews and a focus group. Research was transformative in nature in that the voices of the community and their questions came to the fore, so we had to ensure that this was reflected in our methodology. We also had to ensure that we documented the research in a way that the Amputee and War-Wounded Association could use for activism to ensure reparations for the community.

AbstractInterventions that promote public health have the potential to transform lives, particularly for those who experience disability, where marked social and material inequalities occur across the life‐course. When evaluating such interventions, health‐related quality‐of‐life is regarded as a primary outcome and used to inform evidence‐based practice. Quality‐of‐life measures, however, are not straightforward heuristic devices but express technologies of epistemic power. By prioritizing methodological certainty over the credibility of personal testimonies, those experiencing disability can find themselves excluded from the evidence base on which public health interventions are based. Our study explores how disability is represented by tools informing evaluative public health research and establishes the possibility of alternate practices, including the potential for more appropriate measures better suited to representing experiences. We conclude by considering how discussions about "flourishing" can create more inclusive and empowering practices able to challenge inequalities and discrimination consistent with a commitment to social justice.Related ArticlesEwert, Benjamin. 2021. Studying kinship has involved doing family, displaying family and 'displaying family' as a sensitising concept to understand modalities troublesome to display. Fathers at antenatal screening clinics for sickle cell are faced with pressures to produce multiple displays – of family, illness knowledge, the good father and the model citizen – often in the face of racialised identities. Such fathers emphasise the importance of hypervisibility in gendered spaces and hypervigilence, lest pressures to adopt the 'right' disposition have adverse consequences for themselves, partners or their children. The displays of fathers, as well as displays they decline, are orientated to repair of social relationships. Where displays are provoked by social relations – resisting racist or gender stereotypes, navigating citizenship uncertainties, negotiating work and family lives – displays become problematic. Family display becomes troubled where the preferred social relationships fathers seek to constitute are ones that are not readily accommodated within extant social relations.

Public health research purports to provide the evidence base for policies, programmes and interventions to improve the health of a population. However, there is increasing awareness that the experiences of disabled people have played little part in informing this evidence base. This paper discusses one aspect of a study commissioned by England's National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to review the implications for public health of theories and models of disability. This part of the study focused on the development of a tool or decision aid to promote ethical inclusion of disabled people in public health randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and evaluative research. The tool was introduced at four regional deliberating panels' involving politically and socially active disabled people. In addition, we held a panel with public health professionals. The deliberation panels debated how the focus of public health was narrowing, why disability was excluded and positive and negative issues with using rights to guide research and evaluative practice. Politically active disabled people argued for a social model of human rights to guide any rights based tools or decision aids in public health and disability research.
